To My Daughter

I watched as you opened your new eyes
So beautiful blue
the first to look at me

I watched as you carefully stepped
forward
Your first step
to walk toward me
I watched as your mouth formed a breath
to blow out the candles
Your third birthday
To show me how big you were
I watch as you sit on the floor in the
middle of the dance floor
you struggle to put on your ballet slippers
you look at me with eyes sparkling with
pride
As I watch you dance toward me
I watch as you run with hair flying
Getting ready for your first dance recital
asking me if I think you practiced enough
As you gracefully dance into a new world
I watch as you admire the beautiful
diamond on your left hand
You look at me with your eyes dreaming
As you take your first step away from me
